Choosing the Right Accessories to Spruce up Your Aquarium by Cheryl Otega

Accessories are added to a fish tank to make it look more real or simply for fun. They are also added to make the aquarium look like the natural habitat of the fish. When deciding on the kind of accessories to put in the tank, one has to take time to plan the final result they desire. The key elements within a fish tank must be considered. These include the heater, the lights and the filter. When determining the kind of accessories to place inside a fish tank, one should consider the size of the tank. For large fish tanks there should be a provision for large accessories that complement the tank. In such a tank, one is likely to have different kinds of fish, including small and large ones. There is a need for the smaller fish to enjoy their ‘privacy’.

Cichlid tanks are aquariums that are found in two forms: the South American and the African variations. With the African cichlids, plenty of accessories need to be added to provide room for ‘hiding’ momentarily while the South American kind will need to have a lot of space since they grow quite large. These tanks should be very large in order to accommodate the growing fish. Tetra and livebearer tanks on the other hand may be kept in tanks that are relatively smaller. In these tanks there should be many decorations and plants since the fish like to play and require a distraction. Accessories should be placed in moderation to avoid a garish appearance.

If the aquarium is a fast moving tank, there should be plenty of space to allow the fish to move freely. The fish in these tanks move very fast. The kinds of accessories that can be added to these tanks are limitless and should be as decorative as possible to enhance the overall appearance of the aquarium. Plants should also form part of the tank. In all types of aquariums, one should add lights since some kind of fish require light in order to thrive and survive in the tank. The lights can act as accessories since they illuminate the colors of other objects in the tank. The filters must be in place as well as a heater system before any accessories can be added to the tank. The filters ensure that the tank is clean and this also contributes to the general appearance of the fish tank.
