Freshwater aquarium needs to be maintained quite regularly mainly because the tank is in an enclosed environment and can only stay healthy for a minimal amount of time. This is because freshwater organisms need fresh water of a certain pH level or else they will not survive for long. With practice as well as careful balancing of the tanks environment, the aquarium will look good even though there are some essential tasks in freshwater aquarium maintenance that need to be observed. The first thing is to check the aquarium’s temperature everyday. Heaters’ thermostats can break and there is a need to know this well in advance so that the fish can be saved.
The water temperature needs to be in a range of within 3oC to 4oC. The filter should always be checked regularly. It may stay as it is for a long period of time but it is a good habit to check it frequently. Use the feeding time to check on the fish because at feeding time, a person may know whether the fish has lost its appetite or not. A fish that is not feeling well may distance itself away from the rest of the fish and the owner, if concerned, isolates this particular fish from the rest of the fish just in case its ailment is going to affect the other fish. You may return the fish to the general population if all is considered well with the health of the fish.
A few tasks should be considered every week. Of top priority is partial water change. The waste that fish excrete accumulates in the tank as opposed to a river or stream that can be washed away by the rushing water. In a single week, change the water about five to fifty percent which will stop the accumulation of ammonia that can cause harm to the fish. This task can be time consuming however, it is worth this effort in ensuring the fish in the aquarium stay healthy. The new water needs to be warmed up to match the temperature of the tank or else the fish will be stressed unnecessarily.
The glass needs to be cleaned once in every week both outside and inside. This prevents the possibility of algae forming up inside the tank. The algae should not trouble the fish tank owner as much as concentrating on the panes that are used in viewing the fish. Be careful to prevent scratching the tank.
